Rigid box or folding carton: which do you need?
Rigid boxes feel premium and are kept. Folding cartons are cheaper and ship flat. Here is how to decide.
Choose a folding carton when cost and flat shipping matter most. Choose a rigid box when the box is part of the product and people will keep it. Many brands use both: a carton for the everyday range and a rigid box for gift sets.
What each one is
A folding carton is printed paperboard that is cut, scored and folded. It ships flat and is assembled by hand or machine. A rigid box is made from thick greyboard, usually 2 mm, wrapped in printed paper. It arrives already assembled and does not fold flat.

When a rigid box is worth the cost
If the box will be photographed, reused or given as a gift, the extra cost usually pays back in perceived value. If the product is bought in a hurry and the box is thrown away, a carton is the better spend.
When a folding carton is the better call
Cartons win on freight cost, on storage space and on reprint cost when artwork changes often. They also have a lower minimum, which suits a first run.
A mixed approach
Many brands put the everyday product in a carton and sell a rigid gift version at holidays. The artwork can be shared between both, which keeps the brand consistent.
Frequently asked questions
Are rigid boxes recyclable?
The board and paper wrap are paper, but magnets, foil and laminates can complicate recycling. Ask about mono-material options if recyclability matters.
Can I switch from a carton to a rigid box later?
Yes, but the artwork needs reflowing for the new dieline. Our team can do that for you.
